Women breasts have a hight aesthetic and erotic value. They represent femininity par excellence and the most important sexual character of feminin figure.
Maybe because of that, breast augmentation is nowdays the commonest of plastic surgeries.
These technique is used in patients with micromastia –small breasts—or in order to correct small ptosis –drooping breast--.
It consists of placing a retroglandular implant –under the breast— or a retropectoral implant –under the chest mussle--.
Implants can be of different nature: hydrogel, saline solution or silicon. Silicon is the most used because its consistency is similar to the mammary gland.
- It needs local anaesthesia after patient’s sedation. It does not require hospitalization.
- A periaureolar incision is made leaving a near to invisible scar.
- Afterwards the implant is placed, all the layers of tissue are sutured and the patient is bandaged for 24-48h. When time is up, we replace the bandage with a compressive bra up to 20 days.
Side effects to breast augmentation include "capsular contracture". When an artificial material is introduced in the body, this can react building a layer of scar tissue around the material that is called capsule. If this capsule is built around an implant and tightens it until it becomes hard, we have a capsular contracture. It happens in a few cases, in very low percentages. It can even appear just in one breast of the patient and not in the other of the same patient. In these cases the capsule should be open and that would be the end of the problem.
When we have a patient eligible for breast surgery, we should do a good anamnesis, patient history and radiological study of her breasts to be sure that there is no previous pathology.
What is beauty? Aristotle was asked, and he answered:
--ONLY A BLIND CAN MAKE SUCH A QUESTION.
